From Accounting Manager to Transformation Initiative: Embracing change

Introduction

Years ago, I experienced a significant change in my career. The company I was working for was taken over by a competitor, and my accounting manager position was declared redundant. However, I was fortunate enough to be offered a job to work for a large transformation initiative. This opportunity opened doors for me to learn new skills and grow my career in ways that I never imagined. In this blog post, I will share my experience of working for a transformation initiative and how it helped me to progress in my career.

Implementation of a New ERP System

The transformation initiative I was offered to work for aimed to introduce new processes based on a centralized finance model. The implementation of a new ERP system was the enabler of this program. The goal was to streamline processes and provide accurate and consistent financial information across all regions. Before the program was initiated, there was an anecdote going around that the CEO requested financial information from the various regions. He received so many different versions of the same report as the number of regions. It was the moment that he requested that next time, he would like to receive “one version of the truth.” Although I am not sure if the anecdote is accurate, I know that it reflects the importance of having accurate and consistent data.

Learning New Skills

Working for the transformation initiative was challenging, but it was also an excellent opportunity for me to learn new skills. I was exposed to new technologies, methodologies, and ways of working that I would never have experienced in my accounting manager role. I learned how to manage large-scale projects, work with cross-functional teams, and present to senior management. These skills were crucial in helping me progress in my career.

Career Progression

Working for the transformation initiative was a turning point in my career. It helped me to develop new skills and gain exposure to a broader range of business operations. This experience allowed me to progress in my career and take on new challenges. It was based on that experience that encouraged me to take the step and incorporate Anosis Nederland my consulting firm. Since 2017 I am offering my services as freelance consultant.

Conclusion

Being made redundant from my accounting manager role was a difficult experience. However, it opened doors for me to work for a transformation initiative that allowed me to develop new skills, progress in my career, and work on exciting projects. The implementation of a new ERP system was the enabler of this program, and it highlighted the importance of having accurate and consistent data. Looking back, I am grateful for the opportunity to work for the transformation initiative, and I would encourage others to embrace change and take on new challenges in their careers.
